How to Choose Table Tennis Blades
Choosing table tennis paddles is definitely not an easy task, especially for beginners. Fortunately, there are ratings made that can certainly help you to fulfill this task easier. Through these ratings, you will have an idea of their control, speed, and weight from manufacturer companies.
For instance, if you are an all-around player, choosing table tennis paddle with an all-around wood is the perfect choice. Your choices include 5-ply blades with speed around 6 – 8. For the offensive players, it is better to choose faster paddle with speed over 8 while the number of plies should be around 7+ . The offensive blades are definitely guaranteed faster speed and even extra power. The carbon composite blades generally provide larger sweet and great blade stability.
For those who need a defensive blade, it is recommended choosing the slower types of blade. This is because the slow blade will offer you relatively better control. As for the fast blades, it is perfect in performing offensive shots. However, the touch and controllability is less.
Regarding the handle, it already depends on the player’s preference. However, flare handle has always been the company’s best seller. There is also the anatomic handle coming in second with straight handle blades as third. In relation to that, half of the professional tennis players prefer blades with straight handle due to its flexibility.
Pure Wood vs Carbon Composite:
Carbon composite blades usually offers you better speed with relatively larger sweet spot in sacrifice with less spin, less feel, and less control. Generally the carbon composite paddles have more vibration than the pure wood ones. The pure wood blades, on the other hands, offer better feel, and spin support, while its speed and power is lower. In the end, choosing table tennis blades with regards to this aspect all depends in finding the suited blade for you and also your style.
What Type of handle suits your style ?
The simple answer in choosing table tennis blades is the type that feels good for you whenever you use it. But, there is an exception. For those who frequently switch between forehand and backhand , or defensive players who always perform ‘twiddle’ should use blades with a straight handle. It will be more convenient to rotate the blade. Below is an information guide about the commonly used handle types:
1. Flared: It is the most common type of handle with the top having the thinner part (also known as Concave). It is especially good for forehand players. While the handle offers you a relatively firm grip, it has less flexibility.
2. Anatomic: It has a shape just like the flared, except with a bump in the center to fit the shape of the hand. It is very popular among the players who has relatively bigger hand.
3. Straight: As state before, straight handle is good for backhand, or defensive players who frequently switch or flip the paddles. It allows you to hold the blade looser than the Flared one. This will beneficial to twist your wrist very quickly.
4. Penhold: This is a short style handle (Chinese penhold), for powerful attacking play.
Number of Plies Matter:
The number of plies are generally ranged between 1- 7. The 5 plies paddle are however the most common ones. The blade with 5 plies are great for looping while 7 plies are for driving and blocking. Regularly the blades can flex more if it has fewer layers since trampoline effect that supports spinning is increased. In other words. thinner blades are meant for looping and those with thicker ones are for driving. The thickest is however best for blocking the strong loop. This is because to block the heavy topspin loop, the bat’s face must be closed as much as possible. Naturally the thicker bat will act as the close face while the flexible bat will act as the open face.

Butterfly Apolonia ZLC
The Butterfly Apolonia ZLC blade comes with a superb material making it light and flexible. Its fibers are positioned nearer to the core via Innerforce Layer technology which gives the blade a controlled and softer touch. Hence, it is suitable for players who are seeking for spin-dynamic ZLC-fiber.
Following are some pros and cons of this blade.
The control of the ZLC blade makes it possible for player to do consistent topspin. When looping the ball, it has a feeling as if the ball is stuck in the blade for a moment before shooting. Also, backhand looping is not easy. However, the user can produce stable, fast and spinny shots in forehand and backhand.
This is where you excel particularly with the backhand, but for left-handed players, the backhand becomes tricky. Blocking with the Apolonia ZLC blade is stable whether dealing with active or passive blocking. The blade is also simple to punch the ball when used together with Tibhar Evolution MX-P rubber. During match play when the opponent power loops, you rarely block the ball using the Apolonia blade since punching is a better alternative. With a heavy opponent loop, it is simpler to absorb the incoming spin and also kick it back.
This may include pushing and flicking whereby using the blade feels familiar with the blade. The user can push the ball fast and at times without spin which confuses the opponent. Also, the banana flick can work well due to the bounciness of the blade.
The combination of Apolonia and Tibhar Evolution MX-P rubber is of an added advantage as a result of the great power of MX-P which is manageable and friendly. Even though it doesn’t feel fast its results on the ball are amazing. Powerlooping and looping with the Apolonia is the most recommended since the ball is seized by the blade for some time before it shoots like a cannon.
The Butterfly Apolonia ZLC blade is faster due to the woody features that give it great feeling and control.
Butterfly Liu Shiwen ZLF
Every table tennis player, no matter is it an amateur or a professional, knows how important it is to find the right blade. So, you can understand why I was looking for mine for a long time. I had tried out a lot of them, when a friend introduced me with the Butterfly Liu Shiwen ZLF blade. That’s a Japanese made blade named by the popular Chinese player Liu Shiwen. I had the luck to get my hands on a Japanese version, but it’s important to say that Butterfly blades are made in Europe, too.
With its weight of 87 g, someone could say that it is too light maybe, but l was quite satisfied with it. It’s mostly an attacking and counter attacking blade that is great for close and middle distances. It’s easy to handle and the straight handle is a great plus , especially compared to the flared one.
The Butterfly Liu Shiwen ZLF blade showed that it is capable for good spin shots due to its great dwell. You just have to have the right timing, but that comes with practice.
It is a bit slow when the game comes on the table, but it offers a great amount of control and a great woody feeling. The only problem with this blade is that it can act a bit strange with rubbers. Some friends of mine had the same problem, but the blade is still great.
I was also amazed with its built and design. I especially like the symbol of a red phoenix on it.
At the end, I would just say that I have fallen in love on first sight with this blade. I don’t know why this Butterfly Liu Shiwen ZLF table tennis blade is so popular among the professional players, but l would recommend it to everyone. And my friend got a drink for his role in this story.
